Существует несколько близких по химической структуре типов Х. — a, b, c и d, из которых наиболее важны хлорофиллы a и b. Х. b содержит на 1 атом кислорода больше и на 2 атома водорода меньше, чем Х. а. Последний найден у всех зеленых растений, Х. b отсутствует у многих водорослей и др. растений. В процессе фотосинтеза Х. поглощает световую энергию и превращает ее в энергию химических связей органических соединений.
